During phase one, teachers tried to gauge the pre-existing knowledge of children about names of animals, their food habits, habitat, uses and care of animals. Teachers made observations and noted down the prior knowledge children had about the animals along with their misconceptions. Children were given opportunities to express their understanding verbally and non-verbally through different activities like art, clay work and creating stories .
